M Ted Chamberlain has been teaching Choir for 22 years, the past 5 years at Meridian Middle School, where he continues to teach one choir and one orchestra. He holds BA degrees in Vocal Performance and K-12 Music Education with endorsements in all areas of music (Vocal, Instrumental and General) and he earned National Board Certified Teacher status in 2005 becoming one of the first 4 secondary music teachers in Washington state to earn that status. In addition to teaching music in secondary schools, Mr. Chamberlain has directed church choirs, the Tacoma Youth Chorus Concert Choir and barbershop choruses, including taking the Puyallup-based “Rainier Valley Harmonizers” to win the national small chorus championship in Ohio in 2001. With a passion for singing and performing that appeared at an early age, Mr. Chamberlain has been singing in [and since college, directing and coaching] vocal ensembles his whole life. When in high school, he discovered the tight harmonies and simple, yet universal emotions found in barbershop harmony extremely appealing. Besides directing barbershop choruses, Mr. Chamberlain has performed all over the Northwest in various quartets, two of which became quartet champions of the northwest “Evergreen District” (WA, OR, ID, MT, AK, BC and Alberta). He has competed in international quartet competitions several times as a bass, a baritone and as a tenor placing as high as 26th in the world. In his most recent quartet, “Sincerely Yours”, Mr. Chamberlain sings bass. All this performing and directing has led to some additional pursuits for Mr. Chamberlain. He owns and operates a small sound reinforcement business, makes vocal learning tracks for barbershop choruses, coaches men’s and women’s quartets and choruses around the Northwest, teaches occasional private voice lessons and has recently begun doing work as a voice over actor. Mr. Chamberlain maintains memberships in MENC (Music Educator’s National Conference, ACDA (American Choral Director’s Association), ASTA (American String Teacher’s Association) The Barbershop Harmony Society (SPEBSQSA). Mr. Chamberlain lives in Puyallup with his amazing wife, Michele, who teaches Science at Meridian MS. Between them they have 4 children: Amanda 22, Evan 19, Katie 18 and Emma 14…and 3 dogs.
