Letter to Students and Parents
All Jazzers!
It’s time to begin planning for our trip to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival on February 25-27. 2011. There’s a few things to go over and great news to share with everyone, so I’ll get to it.
First, our trip isn’t just for a jazz festival performance. We will be making a campus visit to WSU that will include a clinic with the jazz professors there, and a possible walking tour of the campus. We might also be able to attend the WSU-UW women’s basketball game on Saturday night. Yes, it’s quite possible that you will sit in and be able to sight read some pep tunes.
We will be staying in Clarkston, far away from campus. I’ve heard horror stories from directors staying at or near campus, so the best option is to stay far away. It’s a Motel 6, with Safeway, Starbucks, McDonalds, and Costco within a minute or 2 walk. There will be other high school groups there as well.
We are travelling on MTR Western. If you’ve been following the news lately, their owner just got busted for a Ponzi scheme. However, we have a signed contract and I believe they already have an investor group lined up to take the company. I will contact them before the end of the week to confirm things. It is still the premiere motor coach company on the West Coast, so I’d rather stay with them than go.
For 2 nights in the hotel, transportation, festival fees, and substitutes for Mr. Couch and I, the cost is $215. The only area of cost that flunctuates is the transportation, as that is split between the number of students travelling. Right now, we have 32 students in the jazz bands. Your fundraising accounts through PTSA can be used towards the trip. I will figure out how to go about deposits and things and get back to you. I’m also sending along an itinerary for you to peruse. Times and events will change a bit when we get our actual performance times, but I figured I’d let you see the plan.
Looking forward to travelling!
