Course Outcomes

As a result of this class students will know, understand and be able to do the following:

1.   One octave scales and arpeggios in most keys

2.   Two octave scales and arpeggios through four sharps and three flats

3.   All State three octave scales at a slow tempo

4.   Baroque, Classical, and romantic Era playing conventions

5.   Count rhythms with syllables

6.   Sight read easy to moderate literature

7.   Demonstrate recommended playing posture and bow hold

8.   Analyze music terms and signs

9.   Refine intonation (tuning and ear training)

10.   Explore music theory according to grade and musical background

 Course Description:

Orchestra 2 is the freshman/sophomore level performing string ensemble class. Students will perform in required school concerts and Green River Music Region Large Group Contest. Other optional events include musicals, tours, Solo and Ensemble Contest and All State/All Northwest Orchestra. Practice records will be turned in weekly. Two practice "byes" are available per quarter at the student's discretion. Minutes practiced at home per week will be graded as follows:

 Extra credit is available for practice beyond 210 minutes per week. A metronome and electronic tuner with clip on microphone are highly recommended for home and  school practice. District owned instruments have a scheduled annual fee of $60 for the year. Concert black is required for most performances, long black for ladies and  black tux or suit for gentlemen. The dresses are $55 and will be ordered the first week of October. Men's suits or tuxes do not have a specific design (other than color) and may be purchased on your own.

 Course Grading Policies

 Progress reports will come out at mid quarter and will include reported homepractice. Extra Credit is available through teacher approved musical activities. A schedule of required events will be given as soon as possible and will be updated. Please inform the director of conflicts well in advance of the event.

Cheating:

In the first instance of cheating, the student will receive an "F" grade  for the week involved. Subsequent cheating will result in disciplinary action that may lead to suspension or expulsion and/or loss of credit for the class.

 Kentridge Charger Standards

 Kentridge students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that promotes a proper learning environment and reflects positively on themselves, their classmates, teachers, family and community. Attendance Policies

Students must participate in classroom activities and attend 85% (77 days) of a class per semester to receive credit for the class. Arrival at class later ten (10) minutes is considered an absense.~ Students may 'buy-back' lost instructional time from excused absences by attending Learning Lab, Saturday School, or by other means that meet with the teacher's approval. ~ Students must 'buy-back' the instructional opportunity within ten (10) days following their return to school. ~ School sponsored activities (e.g. field trips, athletic contests) do not count toward the student's total absences.

Tardies

It is your responsibility to arrive to each class on time each day. Tardies are defined as late arrival to class during the first ten (10) minutes of class. Consequences for tardies are as follows:

~    1st Tardy: Reminder

~    2nd Tardy: Second reminder

~    3rd Tardy: Possible lowering of quarter grade, note to parents, work out a plan of

action.

~    4th Tardy: Teacher assigns 1 hr. of detention and contacts parent/guardian.

~    5 or more Tardies: Administrative referral, including detention, Saturday School

and/or suspension.

~    Note: Detentions must be served within four (4) school days for each hour

or double time, Saturday School or suspension may result.

 Hall Passes

Students out of class must have with them a hall pass issued by a staff member. Students without a pass will be returned to their classroom and /or disciplined.
